Laura-Doe’s Vaudeville of the Vulva

Ever confused a Volvo with a vulva? A G-string with a G-spot? A missionary with a position?
Dripping with tongue-in-cheek humour, Laura-Doe’s canny characters and unusually vocal velvet vulvae illuminate and entertain on the fertile topic of female genitalia.Taking the baton from Eve Ensler’s ground breaking Vagina Monologues, Vaudeville of the Vulva leads us giggling and gasping into a deeper appreciation of this much maligned and misunderstood body part.

Vaudeville of the Vulva is an hilarious one woman comic cabaret, entertaining and educating about female sexuality with humour and song.  A contribution to the genre that includes the Vagina Monologues, the Vaudeville is written and performed by actress, comedienne and pleasure activist, Laura-Doe. It features a host of ingenious characters including, The Vulva Underground – a troupe of unusually vocal velvet vulvae! Not to be confused with Puppetry of the Penis, this show is funny, sexy and wise, yet involves no nudity – instead it seeks to entertain, inspire and inform about an important but under discussed topic.

Informing by entertaining

“In the past hundred years we have seen pioneers such as Judy Chicago, Betty Dodson and Eve Ensler make groundbreaking contributions towards putting female genitalia on the map.” says Laura-Doe. “But the fact remains that for the majority of people women’s genitals are hard to name accurately, if at all, and shrouded in mystery. Vaudeville of the Vulva is a light-hearted, comic cabaret that informs by entertaining. However its motivation is serious as it seeks to gently lift the taboos and allow both women and men the freedom to speak about, understand and appreciate the very body parts that make us women. I use comedy to inform, to release tension and address some disempowering attitudes about that extraordinary body part through which we all normally enter the world.”

Laura-Doe is no stranger to entertaining. She wrote and performed her first one-woman show, a feminist commentary entitled ‘The Dangers of Being a Princess’ at the age of 6. Since then she has been busy honing her performance skills as an actress, lecturer, corporate trainer and MC, developing her singing talents writing and performing with The Voices of Gaia and being generally hilarious in the privacy of her own home.

Music for the show was created by The Chaps, Andrew Cox on piano & keyboards and Anando Bharti on bass and guitar. Anando Bharti also produced a recording of the songs from the show which is available for download
